What to ask your service tech during an air emergency

HVAC Mistakes

estimateIt was the dog days of summer, and as luck would have it after nearly 15 years, Gene B’s air conditioner broke down in the middle of the night. What happened next was a true air emergency.

“We were expecting company the following day, and instead of getting ready, I was calling for service,” recalls Gene. “Having this happen so unexpectedly meant it was just as hot inside as it was out.”

Gene’s situation is common because air conditioners are unpredictable. Fortunately, when these situations arise, Hoosier Indoor Air can help.

Our Emergency Service, is available 24/7, our technicians are trained to work on all air conditioning equipment, and answer questions to put you at ease. Because we understand that what’s a normal day in the field for to us is anything but for our customers, we share questions to consider for keeping family cool, when an air emergency strikes.

Are you licensed and insured?

In Indianapolis, HVAC technicians are required to be licensed. If they’re not, you definitely don’t want them doing work.  Being bonded and insured shows not only a commitment to quality and being current, but it also signals that you are doing work with a reputable company. It also ensures that you’re free from liability if something happens. For added safety, ask if the company has the appropriate insurance.

Can you explain what you’ll do, and will you offer references?

When air emergencies strike, the first thing you want is to know is that your home will cool down and be comfortable. This is understandable. But, knowing how is also important. We recommend asking your service tech to provide a basic explanation of the work they will be doing. Likewise, it’s a good time to ask any questions you might have about the estimate that should be available in writing.

Written estimates are standard practice within our business, as are references. But, we still advocate asking for both if not provided upfront. It’s a good indication of how a technician works, and if they can’t or refuse to provide them, this is a bad sign, and one you should work with someone else.

What is your experience?

Anyone can claim that they are the best in class, that they provide exceptional customer service, or have the trust of an entire community. But, how many can prove it? We suggest asking your technician to provide a detailed account of the work they’ve done – and to show you evidence of their expertise. After all, the more you know about their experience and specialties, the more comfortable you can become before, during and after the process.

Do you offer financing, warranties and guarantees?

When your air-conditioner has seen better days, and an air emergency means investing in a new unit, you want to know it won’t break the bank. Most companies will offer financing options. Also, they should stand behind the work they do, and provide a warranty because as we discussed earlier, air conditioners can be unpredictable. If your technician can give all of this and more, you’re on your way to surviving an air emergency.

You don’t have to be an expert to survive air emergencies that accompany the dog days of summer. However, knowing what to ask and when can get you through the discomfort while ensuring your home runs efficiently for years to come. To learn more or to schedule an estimate, call us today.
