The Blower Door Test

HVAC Mistakes

Every home has air leaks throughout its build but as homes age, the more leaks there can be. With many small air leaks, your energy bills could be much higher than they need to be. To discover the amount of air leaks throughout your home, one very efficient and effective way to do this is with the blower door test.

What is a Blower Door Test?

A blower door test is a tool used by many heating and cooling companies to determine the extent of a homes air leakage. This tool is made up of a fan, a mounting system that attaches to the exterior door and a meter to measure the pressure of air in your home. A blower door test measures the amount of air required to keep your house at an appropriate pressure level, and how many leaks are throughout the home.

Who Should Get a Blower Door Test?

Home owners of both new and older homes can and should get a blower door test completed. If you are building a home, the best time to get a blower door test completed is after insulation has been installed, and before drywall is hung. If there are air leaks detected at that point, they will be much easier to fix now than after drywall is hung. For existing homes, the blower door test is great for detecting how many leaks there are, and where they may be.
