Winter Maintenance Checklist

HVAC Winter Maintenance Checklist

Before the cold weather sets in, you should have your HVAC system inspected by a licensed professional and Hoosier Indoor Air is here to help! A well tuned system provides comfort and even temperatures throughout your house. As winter sets in, the demands on your system increase and paying attention to your heating bills, the comfort level throughout your house, drafty or cold rooms, and the overall efficiency of your system can prevent minor repairs from becoming expensive projects and this checklist can get you on the right path!

Actions For A Professional

  • Tighten all electrical connections and measure the voltage and current on motors. Faulty electrical connections can cause unsafe operation of your system and reduce the life of major components.
  • Lubricate all moving parts as necessary. Parts that lack lubrication cause friction in motors and increases the amount of electricity you use.
  • Check and inspect the condensate drain in your central air conditioner, furnace and/or heat pump (when in cooling mode). A plugged drain can cause water damage in the house and affect indoor humidity levels.
  • Check all gas (or oil) connections, gas pressure, burner combustion, and heat exchangers. Improperly operating gas or oil connections are a fire hazard and can contribute to health issues. A dirty burner or cracked heat exchanger causes the burner to operate incorrectly. Either can cause the equipment to operate less safely and less efficiently.

Actions To Do Yourself

  • Check all thermostat settings to ensure the cooling and heating system is keeping you comfortable when you are home, and that it’s saving you money while you are away.
  • Inspect, clean, or change the air filters once a month in your central furnace, and/or heat pump. A dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage your equipment which can lead to early failure.
