Central Indiana winters can be cold and unpredictable, so it’s important to make sure your HVAC system is ready to handle the harsh conditions. Here is a pre-winter HVAC checklist you can use in the fall (that’s right now!) to prepare your system for a cold winter.

Pre-Winter HVAC Checklist

Here are a few great ideas that will help you prepare your system for winter:

Schedule a professional tune-up. This is the most important thing you can do to ensure your HVAC system is running efficiently and effectively. A qualified HVAC technician will clean and inspect your system and make any necessary repairs or adjustments.

Replace your air filter. A dirty air filter can restrict airflow and make your system work harder, which can lead to higher energy bills and premature wear and tear on the system. Replace your air filter every 1-3 months or more often if you have pets or allergies.

Clean the outdoor condenser unit. If you have a heat pump system, be sure to clean the outdoor condenser unit in the fall. This will remove any leaves, dirt, or debris that may have accumulated over the summer. You can clean the condenser unit with a hose and a soft brush.

Ensure proper airflow. Make sure your HVAC registers and vents are not blocked by furniture or other objects. This will allow air to flow freely throughout your home, helping to keep you comfortable and save you money on your energy bills.

Store combustible materials away from the HVAC system. Keep any flammable materials, such as gasoline, paint, and solvents, away from your HVAC system. This will help to reduce the risk of fire.

In addition to the above tips, here are a few other things you can do to prepare your HVAC system for winter:

  • Check your insulation. Make sure your attic and walls are properly insulated to help keep your home warm and save you money on your heating bills.
  • Seal air leaks. Seal any air leaks around your windows and doors to help keep cold air out and warm air in.
  • Clean your fireplace and chimney. If you have a fireplace, be sure to have it cleaned and inspected by a qualified chimney sweep before using it for the first time in the winter.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat can help you save money on your heating and cooling bills by automatically adjusting the temperature when you’re asleep or away from home.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your HVAC system is ready to handle the cold winter weather and keep your home comfortable all season long.
